Hot Trend: Skeleton Key Jewelry

by Kylie 23. July 2010 04:42

Are you searching for an accessory that will unlock your style? A new jewelry trend is skeleton key jewlery, and if you are doing your back to school shopping, these key pendents are a must have for the fall. Trendsetters and young celebrites have found key jewelry to be a unique piece that can be worn as a charm, necklace or even earrings. Celebrities like Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are wearing similar key necklaces but probably paid hundreds for a style that is simple to recreate.

The fleur-de-lis pendent, gothic designs or more traditional key designs are also a common trait found in one or more of the pieces. The inspiration behind the key jewelry is thought to have been started by the famous, Tiffany and Co. but here at the Budget Fashion Report, we are always seeking out ways to get celebrity style on a budget. One option is to actually find old keys and turn them into necklaces. Searching antique shops or even stores like Anthropologie, you may stumble across a unique looking key. Another way to achieve the same look as these celeberites is to opt for sterling silver and CZ key pendents. Going this route will still give you the great look but without the high cost.

The leighton Meester look:

Leighton is wearinga classic skeleton key design. The skeleton key design is characterized with the three loops at the top of the key. A comparable and more reasonably priced pendent would be something like this.

the Selena Gomez look:

Selena is wearing what I would classify is a more gothic design key.  This piece is a little more intricate compared to the previous pendent. Something similar to this design would be something like this charm here. The design has a fleur-de-lis in the handle and gives you that intricate patterned look. Reinvent this look with a shorter chain.

the Taylor Swift look:

Taylor is wearing a pendent that looks more like a real key than the two previous. I would recommend trying to find an actual old antique key but if you can't, a piece that is similar to this would be this key design. Recreate this look with a silver chain and loop the key onto the chain.

In our books, Jessica Alba just can't go wrong with her impeccable sense of style and fashion. Here she is at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival during late March in California. Shes wearing a modern abstract printed mini by Proenza Schouler with a pair of almost matching gray and neon wedges and chunky bracelets.

Make her look your own with a fabulous printed mini and wedges for the perfect summer evening look:

The Look for Less: Nicole Richie's Maxi Dress

by Sarah 26. February 2010 04:35

We don't know about you, but we adore Nicole Richie. The starlet has transformed herself from a trashy reality TV star to a glamorous mother of two with great values and an even greater closet. Nicole is known for her bohemian look, which, despite being copied by many a celebrity, is individual to her and her only. Richie always knows how to make an outfit her own. Case in point, the look above. Her long blue silk maxi dress is pretty, but not particularly one of a kind. However, Nicole made the look her own by winterizing it with a pair of black ankle boots and a black leather jacket from her own Winter Kate collection. Get her look for less below!

C&C California Navy Blue Maxi Dress, $128

Forever21 Faux Leather Jacket, $32.80

Forever21 Black Crinkled Ankle Boots, $27.80

The Look for Less: Olivia Palermo Plays with Patterns

by Sarah 15. February 2010 04:40

Confession: we love Olivia Palermo. The socialite might not be the friendliest gal around, but she's got personal style up the wazoo. Case in point: her look at the Ports 1961 fashion show at New York fashion week last week. We can't quite figure out how Palermo manages to keep such a healthy head of hair when her legs are like toothpicks - but we have to admit that she knows how to dress.

We love the way she's paired an eclectic mix of patterns and textures in her outfit below - the plaid shirt with the wool shorts, fuzzy sweater, and black tights...it's a match made in fashionista heaven! Get a lower priced version of Olivia's outfit with the pieces below!

Cycle Wool Tweed Shorts, $39

Lucky Brand Tyler Plaid Shirt, $69.50

DKNY Marled Cardigan, $44.99

Jessica Simpson Nolita Black Heel, $69

Spanx Black Tight End Tights, $26

Get the Look: Herve Leger Fall 2010

by Sarah 15. February 2010 04:24

If you've never seen an Herve Leger bandage dress, chances are you've been living under a rock. The famously slimming and curve-hugging knit pieces have been worn by pretty much every starlet alive, so it's no surprise that a bevy of pretty young things flocked to New York City's Bryant Park to see Max Azria present his Herve Leger line yesterday afternoon. Pictured below is Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr, donning a black and blue Leger dress. Love the look? Leger dresses retail for over $1000, but you can find looks for less! Below, some of our favorite attempts at the famous bandage dress.

Arden B Ombre Bandage Dress, $22.50

Get the Look: Dolce and Gabbana Valentine

by Sarah 10. February 2010 04:29

Looking to spruce up your outfit for Valentine's Day this weekend? Why not take some style inspiration from Dolce and Gabbana? The following runway look appears complex - but it's easily recreatable with a few key pieces. Here's what you'll need:

A floral minidress (like this one from Forever21)

A sheer black t-shirt (like this one from Old Navy)

A chunky coin necklace (like this one from Forever21 layered with this one from Topshop)

A pair of beige pumps (like this pair from Nine West)

A chunky chain bracelet (like this one from Forever21)

Layer the black sheer tee underneath the minidress, making sure that your bra straps show through the tee. Layer the two chunky coin necklaces around your neck, throw on the bracelet, and rock the beige pumps. If you're feeling especially crafty, create a pair of sheer socks by cutting off a pair of old black nylons at the ankle - tie these off with a black ribbon. Throw your hair back into a messy bun, add some dark red lipstick, and voila! You're ready to take the runway.

Inspired By: Giuseppe Zanotti Zipper Boots

by Sarah 17. August 2009 04:53

Aren't these Giuseppe Zanotti zippered boots just to die for? Seriously, they're so Marianne Faithful we could almost squeal with boho-biker infused happiness. The tan leather is beautiful, but the zippered detailing is a neutral take on the biker trend that's been sweeping both the runways and the streets. If at $1325 these babies are a bit out of your budget (we know they're as much as our monthly rent check), check out Aldo's take on the trend. We're in love with the foldover, whether it be knee-high like the Zanottis, or calf length like the Aldos. The Aldo pair is made of black suede, but it's got the same feel as the Zanotti pair, for a fraction of the price. Scoop these up for $140

Get the Look: Alexis Bittar Metal Cuffs

by Sarah 14. August 2009 04:40

The latest Zoe Report has us drooling over Alexis Bittar's gorgeous heavy metal jewels. Like Rachel herself, we're former gold addicts that have been seeing the silver lining lately thanks to some multi-metal pieces that are all silver, all the time.

Says Rachel:

Ok...everyone stop for just a moment and drool over Alexis Bittar's heavy metal crafts. Seriously, on another level. I've worshiped him as an artist and friend for almost a decade, but will never be immune to the feeling I get when I look at his over-the-top jewels.

After years of wearing strictly yellow gold, these chrome, rhodium and gunmetal bracelets reignited my love for silver. They fit right in with the current resurfacing eighties look, though Alexis has actually been way ahead of the trend. He started making pieces with lucite, spikes, and neon from the get-go. It is quintessential Alexis. When I rock his creations, I tend to make them the focal point of my outfit. For instant Debbie Harry-cool, pair these bangles with bleached torn jeans, a distressed tee, and vest. xoRZ

To get the look for less, Rachel suggests this distressed metal cuff from Oak, which retails for a surprisingly affordable $32. Snag yours here!

The Look for Less: Vanessa Hudgen's Ruffled Dress

by Sarah 7. August 2009 04:50

Vanessa Hudgens has been making the press rounds for her new movie Bandslam, and she's ensuring that she looks good doing it. Here she is in a gorgeous plum colored ruffled Plastic Island dress. You might not be able to afford or find Vanessa's actual dress, but this one from Forever21 is a pretty good match! It's got the same ruffled look at the collar, and the color is a perfect plum 10!
