Hot Trend: Skeleton Key Jewelry

by Kylie 23. July 2010 04:42

Are you searching for an accessory that will unlock your style? A new jewelry trend is skeleton key jewlery, and if you are doing your back to school shopping, these key pendents are a must have for the fall. Trendsetters and young celebrites have found key jewelry to be a unique piece that can be worn as a charm, necklace or even earrings. Celebrities like Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are wearing similar key necklaces but probably paid hundreds for a style that is simple to recreate.

The fleur-de-lis pendent, gothic designs or more traditional key designs are also a common trait found in one or more of the pieces. The inspiration behind the key jewelry is thought to have been started by the famous, Tiffany and Co. but here at the Budget Fashion Report, we are always seeking out ways to get celebrity style on a budget. One option is to actually find old keys and turn them into necklaces. Searching antique shops or even stores like Anthropologie, you may stumble across a unique looking key. Another way to achieve the same look as these celeberites is to opt for sterling silver and CZ key pendents. Going this route will still give you the great look but without the high cost.

The leighton Meester look:

Leighton is wearinga classic skeleton key design. The skeleton key design is characterized with the three loops at the top of the key. A comparable and more reasonably priced pendent would be something like this.

the Selena Gomez look:

Selena is wearing what I would classify is a more gothic design key.  This piece is a little more intricate compared to the previous pendent. Something similar to this design would be something like this charm here. The design has a fleur-de-lis in the handle and gives you that intricate patterned look. Reinvent this look with a shorter chain.

the Taylor Swift look:

Taylor is wearing a pendent that looks more like a real key than the two previous. I would recommend trying to find an actual old antique key but if you can't, a piece that is similar to this would be this key design. Recreate this look with a silver chain and loop the key onto the chain.

Celebrity Style on a Budget

by Kylie 14. June 2010 07:35

If you watch celebs walk down the red carpet they are typically dripping in jewelry. Sparkling diamonds and ulta-blinged out accessories are the norm when it comes to celebrity red carpet fashion. You can accomplish the same looks at a fraction of the price if you know where to look. Instead of spending thousands on diamonds you can get the same look with CZ (Cubic Zirconia) for a lot less and still have that sparkle. Some popular looks are chandelier, drop and dangle silver earrings. A really popular trend is light colored metals like silver, white gold and platinum. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Carrie Underwood and Penelope Cruz all favor the drop silver earrings. All of these celebs are wearing earrings covered in diamonds but a less expensive alternative is to look into wearing CZ, especially for a glamourous event like a Prom, black-tie dinner, formal ball, etc. Not only will the earrings look great and sparkle like a real diamond, you'll feel like a glamourous movie- star without dropping some serious scrilla.

Here are three styles of celebrity silver earrings that are very close to what the celebrities are wearing and will give you a similar look when you are on a budget.

The first style is a CZ Chandelier similar to what Kim Kardashian is wearing.

 Tear drop CZ earrings.

This next style is similar to what Carrie Underwood is wearing.

 Drop CZ Earrings

Last we have a style that is similar to what Penelope Cruz is wearing.

 Cubic Zirconia Chandelier Earrings.

by Prachi 16. April 2010 06:36

In our books, Jessica Alba just can't go wrong with her impeccable sense of style and fashion. Here she is at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival during late March in California. Shes wearing a modern abstract printed mini by Proenza Schouler with a pair of almost matching gray and neon wedges and chunky bracelets.

Make her look your own with a fabulous printed mini and wedges for the perfect summer evening look:

The Look for Less: Nicole Richie's Maxi Dress

by Sarah 26. February 2010 04:35

We don't know about you, but we adore Nicole Richie. The starlet has transformed herself from a trashy reality TV star to a glamorous mother of two with great values and an even greater closet. Nicole is known for her bohemian look, which, despite being copied by many a celebrity, is individual to her and her only. Richie always knows how to make an outfit her own. Case in point, the look above. Her long blue silk maxi dress is pretty, but not particularly one of a kind. However, Nicole made the look her own by winterizing it with a pair of black ankle boots and a black leather jacket from her own Winter Kate collection. Get her look for less below!

C&C California Navy Blue Maxi Dress, $128

Forever21 Faux Leather Jacket, $32.80

Forever21 Black Crinkled Ankle Boots, $27.80

The Look for Less: Olivia Palermo Plays with Patterns

by Sarah 15. February 2010 04:40

Confession: we love Olivia Palermo. The socialite might not be the friendliest gal around, but she's got personal style up the wazoo. Case in point: her look at the Ports 1961 fashion show at New York fashion week last week. We can't quite figure out how Palermo manages to keep such a healthy head of hair when her legs are like toothpicks - but we have to admit that she knows how to dress.

We love the way she's paired an eclectic mix of patterns and textures in her outfit below - the plaid shirt with the wool shorts, fuzzy sweater, and black tights...it's a match made in fashionista heaven! Get a lower priced version of Olivia's outfit with the pieces below!

Cycle Wool Tweed Shorts, $39

Lucky Brand Tyler Plaid Shirt, $69.50

DKNY Marled Cardigan, $44.99

Jessica Simpson Nolita Black Heel, $69

Spanx Black Tight End Tights, $26

2010 Grammy Fashion (My Faves and Not So Faves)

by brooks 1. February 2010 15:59

Go to fullsize imageGo to fullsize imageI'm a big P!nk fan, so naturally, I thought she looked gorgeous at the 2010 Grammy Awards.  Her performance was breathtaking, as was her red carpet look.  You never know what you're going to get with her.  She can be beautiful and elegant, but yet hard-core and edgy.  Its the best of both worlds!

What can you say Go to fullsize imageabout Lady GaGa?  I'm a fan of her music, but not so much of her odd Go to fullsize imageclothing choices.  She was one of my not so faves as far as her fashion choices go.  Yet, people still go "gaga" for her, so I guess she's doing something right.

Then there's Taylor Swift.  Yes, Taylor Swift.  I can't help but like her!  Her dress was beautiful and age appropriate. Her normally long curly locks were elegantly pulled back finishing off the beautiful look.  Apparently, I'm not the only one who likes her.  She scored quite a few Grammys!Go to fullsize imageGo to fullsize image  I'd definitely say she was another one of my faves of the night.

Other of my not so faves included Kesha (who only presented), Katy Perry, and Ciara.  Other of my faves were Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert (not a girl, but I LOVE him, so he had to be included), and Fergie.  I'm no fashion expert, but I enjoy expressing my opinion.  Agree or disagreee, there they are!

The Look for Less: Rodarte Sweater

by Sarah 25. January 2010 11:39

Rodarte is famous for their knitwear, and when the collection below hit the runway, stars and editors alike went nuts. Of course, the real thing isn't exactly affordable, so it was knocked off by Topshop, who did a pretty good job (see below). However, the Topshop version is long gone, and per usual, Forever21 has attempted (poorly) to knock it off themselves. Check out their effort here. It's not loosely knit, nor does it have the same color scheme, but it's definitely influenced by Rodarte. At only $30, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the real thing. A quick EBay search reveals you can still find a few of the Topshop sweaters - type in "Topshop Rodarte" in the search field and they'll come up. However, if you prefer something influenced by the original and not a direct copy, the Forever21 version is for you!

The Look for Less: Anita Ko Pyramid Jewelry

by Sarah 5. August 2009 05:01

Thanks to fashion goddess Rachel Zoe, we've fallen in love with Anita Ko's stylish yet edgy pyramid jewelry pieces. Ranging from bangles to rings, necklaces to earrings, these Egyptian inspired gold and silver jewels have us dying to rock it out like Pharoah this fall. Sadly, however, at $3600/pop for a bangle and $315 for a pair of earrings, Ko's work is pretty unattainable.

Thankfully, Rachel Zoe, ever the business woman, knows her audience. She knows that not all of us can afford to spent $300 on a pair of earrings. She's provided her readers with a great look for less - click here to purchase the Ettika Pyramid Ring, which retails for only $33. Much more reasonable, no?

Sneak Peek: Miley Cyrus' Max Azria Fashion Line!

by Sarah 4. August 2009 03:23

A while back, we told you that Miley Cyrus had collaborated with designer Max Azria (yes, he of Herve Leger and BCBG fame) on a line called "Miley and Max" for Walmart. Yes, Walmart. Now, we try not to discriminate, as what we do is budget fashion - but we don't exactly look to Miley for her style choices. However, a sneak peek of the line has surfaced, and it doesn't look half bad. In fact, we'd totally wear that blue top. Sure, it looks exactly like something we've seen at Forever21, but no one expected Cyrus to be a fashionista in the making. These are clothes that are a) totally wearable and b) totally affordable. As Miley herself has said, they provide an opportunity for someone in the middle of nowhere, who perhaps doesn't have the access to or the funds to buy the high fashion looks Miley herself sports on stage and in magazines. It makes teen style accessible for those who can't afford the high price finds. Which is, of course, exactly what we do here at Budget Fashion Report. Brava, Miley! We approve.
