Hot Trend: Skeleton Key Jewelry

by Kylie 23. July 2010 04:42

Are you searching for an accessory that will unlock your style? A new jewelry trend is skeleton key jewlery, and if you are doing your back to school shopping, these key pendents are a must have for the fall. Trendsetters and young celebrites have found key jewelry to be a unique piece that can be worn as a charm, necklace or even earrings. Celebrities like Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are wearing similar key necklaces but probably paid hundreds for a style that is simple to recreate.

The fleur-de-lis pendent, gothic designs or more traditional key designs are also a common trait found in one or more of the pieces. The inspiration behind the key jewelry is thought to have been started by the famous, Tiffany and Co. but here at the Budget Fashion Report, we are always seeking out ways to get celebrity style on a budget. One option is to actually find old keys and turn them into necklaces. Searching antique shops or even stores like Anthropologie, you may stumble across a unique looking key. Another way to achieve the same look as these celeberites is to opt for sterling silver and CZ key pendents. Going this route will still give you the great look but without the high cost.

The leighton Meester look:

Leighton is wearinga classic skeleton key design. The skeleton key design is characterized with the three loops at the top of the key. A comparable and more reasonably priced pendent would be something like this.

the Selena Gomez look:

Selena is wearing what I would classify is a more gothic design key.  This piece is a little more intricate compared to the previous pendent. Something similar to this design would be something like this charm here. The design has a fleur-de-lis in the handle and gives you that intricate patterned look. Reinvent this look with a shorter chain.

the Taylor Swift look:

Taylor is wearing a pendent that looks more like a real key than the two previous. I would recommend trying to find an actual old antique key but if you can't, a piece that is similar to this would be this key design. Recreate this look with a silver chain and loop the key onto the chain.

Mother's Day Already?!

by Prachi 29. April 2010 04:17

In the midst of the hectic chaos I call "life" I had a mini epiphany last night that shocked me: Its already the end of April and May is around the corner, meaning->

1. Its almost Mother's Day! (Sunday May 9th)
2. Wedding season is in full throttle and
3. Summer is here! Beach weather!

I honestly feel like Easter weekend was just a few days ago, not weeks. Time just passes by too quickly!

After my realization I went into a small frenzy to find the perfect gift for my mom. She can be picky and already has most of everything she wants. Plus at my age flowers don't exactly suffice unless I get those huge $85-$100+ bouquets. I love my mom but I'm strapped for cash!

She's a huge jewelry fanatic- she's the source of my fashion sense and love of jewelry, well some of it at least. So in honor of our shared love of jewelry I'm going to get her a cubic zirconia ring, once I can decide which one. She doesn't come online often so I'm not worried about divulging too much information. I'm going to pick between these three:

These cubic zirconia (or CZ) rings are fabulous (I'm tempted to get one for myself too!) and not expensive at all. They'll last her (and me) years! Beats buying flowers or chocolates that last a week, maybe. Gotta' love cubic zirconia, you get the look and shine of a diamond for less than half the price!

While on the topic, does everyone else know what they are doing or getting for Mom? If you're still looking, maybe this collection of CZ jewelry will help get the gift juices flowing. The jewelry is by Zulu Moon and they have an online coupon till May 1st (listed below)! I'll be taking full advantage of that! With their huge selection, you'll find plenty of things to Mom's liking.

Where to find the trends, part 1

by Prachi 23. April 2010 04:10

1 & 2. Prints & Vibrant Colors: Trend #2 goes hand in hand with most of the other trends for this season, particularly our prints. Last post, we featured a pretty American Eagle printed summer dress in a vibrant orange and the post before there was a cute Old Navy white floral. Here we have some more:

The Old Navy dress from 2 posts ago and two looks from Kohls. Dress 1, a fun scroll kimono dress and Dress 2, a floral sleeveless.

This top from Target features peacock esk design and colors. Fun and very pretty~

3. Nude Heels: With heels, there is only so much you can reduce your price range before you get to the very quality shoes that you'll only be able to wear a handful of times before they break.

Our suggestions:

This absolutely perfect pair of peep toe heels is by designer Christian Siriano (remember him for Project Runway?). He has a line of shoes for Payless and these are both beautiful and cost effective! Both nude and metallic, they combine the latest trends of the season into one very fierce shoe.

If you're going for a more ethereal and classic look, try these sequined pumps from DSW. By Caparros these satin shoes are a bit pricer but look lovely.

Getting Ready for Prom!

by Prachi 1. April 2010 03:46

Its the middle of Prom Season! Girls, are you ready? The guys have it easy, they just have to pay for the prom tickets, dinner and rent a tux. No big deal. How hard can it be to rent a tux anyways...

The Dress:

If you haven't found that ideal dress yet check out our blog post from February. Maybe you'll find something you didn't notice earlier. This is my personal favorite – its to die for in purple and looks expensive, though it only costs $25.

The Shoes:

These shoes from Overstock have the look for less at under $40! You'll be able to find a ton of great buys there.

This beautiful cloth shoe has a pleated color ribbon that flows over a simple yet elegant black bow. I promise, this picture doesn't do the shoe any justice:

These formal pumps are gorgeous and perfect for prom! With 4 or 5 different colors they'll match almost any dress. The uppers are covered in rhinestones, making them glamorous and a steal!

Now these Albert Nipon pumps are stylish but probably not the best compliment to your prom dress. I just added them because they're pretty and a great deal (only $20!).

The Jewelry

This season if you check out the celebs you'll be seeing a lot of hoop earrings. And anyone been following Kristen Stewart's style? Her red carpet appearances have all been in a strapless dress without a necklace. It makes her - and her dress pop even more.

Keep your neckline empty or simple, instead wear a pair of "wow" earrings for prom - like chandelier earrings. For prom, you want the attention to center first on your dress and THEN on your jewelry. Try Zulumoon.com, they have some great earrings (and a huge sale).

I went a bit overboard with the earrings but what can I say? I love to look. The first 3 earrings are made with Marcasite (a type of gem/crystal) set in sterling silver and each is less than $30! The next 3 are made with Cubic Zirconia, also set in sterling silver.

If you click on these earrings, it will take you to their product page.

The End

Hope that helps! You've got plenty to think about when it comes to prom, this should make all that accessorizing a bit simpler.

Is silver the new gold?

by Sarah 26. January 2010 06:58

From Lady Gaga's ostentatious mirrored outfits on stage to the silver sparkles we've seen parading down the runway, it seems that this might just be the year of silver. If you're a fan of mixed metals, feel free to sprinkle in some gold with your silver - but if you're a lady who prefers gold, consider stocking up on some inexpensive silver pieces to help you stay on trend. We scoured the Forever21 website (our favorite resource for cheap baubles - as we type this, we're wearing two F21 silver rings) and dug up some must-have silver pieces for the Spring season. Clickity click!

Silver Dragonfly Jewelry

by Jewelry 6. October 2009 01:10

My favorite website on the Internet for buying Sterling silver jewelry is zulumoon.com, they have such a huge selection and the prices are always great. So this week when I needed to buy a gift for my friends birthday I went to Zulu Moon. My Friend loves the dragonfly. She has her mystical new age reasons which I should understand but I don't.

Anyway, like I said, she loves the Dragonfly and dragonfly jewelry so I went to zulumoon and found this wonderful amber dragonfly pendant for her for only $44.

Three Color Amber Dragonfly Pendant

About the Dragonfly Pendant

AS you can tell by the picture, the dragonfly is sterling silver and has three different colors of Baltic amber. The body and the wings are sterling silver and the wings and the head are made of amber. This is the perfect gift for my friend the dragonfly lover because her name is... You guessed it, AMBER.

Payless Designer Collaborations for Fall

by Sarah 21. August 2009 04:51

You can tell we've got shoes and fall on the brain here at the Budget Fashion Report. It's just so hot outside, we can't wait to cozy up and wear some chunky knits with fall boots. Surprisingly, we're looking to Payless for some our fall purchases, thanks to their designer collaborations. The retailer has teamed up with a variety of designers, including Lela Rose, Alice & Olivia and Christian Siriano to bring high price looks at a low price point.

We've got our eyes on the Alice & Olivia Madison Biker Boot ($49.99) - it's right on trend for autumn's motorcycle chic looks.

These electric blue suede booties ($34.99) from the Lela Rose line are adorable with their tied detail - very Blair Waldorf, if we do say so ourselves. We're picturing them with everything from light colored skinnies to a mini skirt to black leggings - they're the perfect pop of color for Fall, and they'll totally work with tights.

We're OBSESSED with these snakeskin booties ($49.99) from the Christian Siriano line - they're FIERCE.

Trend Alert: Black Out Shoes

by Sarah 20. August 2009 05:00
It may be a blistering 90 degrees out today here in the Northeast, but autumn's just around the corner, so it's time to start stocking up on fall trends. One of the biggest trends for this upcoming season is the look of biker chic. Cheap and chic retailer Forever21 has, per usual, jumped right on trend, stocking their shoe section with a myriad of funky black shoes that are right on trend. We're especially loving the lace up boots below. All shoes are under $40 and available from Forever21's website. Jump on trend, and be the first to head for the blackout.
